On the 18th and 19th of September, our team at OrthoKai joined Sunway Medical Centre Damansara's Patient Safety Day, where we shared practical options for diabetic foot care, custom insoles and prosthetics with hospital staff and members of the public.

The two-day event brought together several hospital departments and focused on non-communicable diseases (NCDs): long-term conditions such as diabetes that don't spread from person to person. We were invited to join the rehabilitation team and show how orthotics and prosthetics can be part of the conversation.

What Orthokai brought to the event

Alongside the rehab team, we showcased a range of orthotic and prosthetic solutions relevant to diabetes-related care:

  • Diabetic footwear, including our POGO shoes, the Gentle Step series by DARCO, OrthoWedge and heel wedge options

  • Customisable insoles for diabetic and everyday foot care

  • Prosthetic legs

  • Prosthetic hands

The event was open to hospital staff and the public alike. What made it so engaging was discovering how many people had never heard of these options before. Explaining what is possible, and answering questions face to face, was the heart of the two days.

Diabetic shoes and offloading footwear: the POGO shoe steals the show

The star of the booth was the POGO shoe, an athletic offloading sneaker.

Offloading simply means redistributing weight away from an at-risk area of the foot. This is important for people with diabetes, as reduced sensation in the feet combined with repeated pressure can lead to ulcers. The POGO tackles this with a peg-based custom offloading insole, allowing a clinician to remove pegs and target exactly where pressure needs to be reduced.

Its ergonomic design does the rest: a wide toe box, secure bungee laces and a rigid sole that stops the foot bending in ways that place pressure back on a sensitive area. Moreover, it looks like an everyday sneaker and not a medical device. This is especially important as good foot protection is easier to stick with if it is something you are happy to wear.

Custom insoles: not just for diabetes

Another highlight was our custom insoles. Beneficial for people with diabetes, as well as hospital staff who spend long hours on their feet and may benefit from extra support and comfort.

Custom insoles are made based on individual foot imprints after an assessment carried out by a Certified Prosthetist-Orthotist (CPO). They are designed to redistribute pressure across the feet, provide targeted support and improve comfort through the day. For anyone dealing with tired, aching feet, that extra support makes a real difference.

We were also honored to welcome Ms Jasmine, CEO of Sunway Medical Centre Damansara, to our booth where she stopped by and showed interest in our work.

Additionally, one visitor shared that they found the product interesting and had not known such an option existed. They even mentioned that they were considering getting one for their parents, who was living with diabetes.

Comments like these stay with us and remind us how many people are still unaware that these options exist and highlight why events like this are so important.

Why this matters to us

Foot problems often build up quietly, the right footwear, the right support and the right advice at an early stage can help protect your mobility in the long term.

That is why we believe in providing a high standard of care, with a personal touch for every individual. Events like this gives us the opportunity to meet people early, before small problems become bigger ones.

A big thank you to Sunway Medical Centre Damansara and the rehabilitation team for inviting us.
