In simple terms, it moves through three broad phases each time your foot touches the ground: your heel strikes first, your foot rolls forward and flattens to absorb your body weight, and then your foot pushes off again through your toes to propel you into the next step.
A normal, efficient gait cycle distributes pressure evenly and absorbs shock smoothly at each phase. When something disrupts this pattern like a collapsed arch, a leg length difference, an old injury, the body compensates, and place extra strain on joints that were never designed to carry it. During an assessment, you simply stand or walk across a pressure plate or podobarograph, a sensor-embedded pressure plate that maps how pressure is distributed across your foot in real time. It shows us exactly where you're bearing too much weight, where your arch is collapsing, and how your pressure shifts through each phase of your gait cycle. A high arch and a flat foot, for example, produce very different pressure maps on the plate.
